Last week we received the wonderful news below from Sara Rafsky, a 2018 graduate of the CMS program. She becomes the second alum to release a documentary on Netflix this year, following Sue Ding, ’17.
Sara writes:
I hope this message finds you well and that you’ve been doing alright, all things considered, during these crazy past few months. I’ve been quarantining in Brooklyn since leaving Mexico City in early March, where I’ve been producing my first feature documentary on and off for the last few years. Next week on October 14 that film, “The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo” (Las Tres Muertes de Marisela Escobedo) will be premiering on Netflix!
Despite the strangeness of the times we’re living in, I couldn’t be happier and more proud to share the story of Marisela Escobedo, a woman who risked and gave everything in her fight to find justice for her daughter. The events in the documentary took place in Northern Mexico ten years ago but many of its themes–impunity, violence against women, corruption– are tragically still as relevant today in Mexico and in the wider world as they were then.
You can see the subtitled trailer for the film here. I hope you will watch the documentary and encourage your friends to do the same! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Congratulations, Sara!
